Who makes it
StoneFrog Knots is made by Jason Stone, an independent developer, under the StoneFrog name. It is a one-person project: the web app, the iPhone, iPad and Mac app, and the pages on this site are designed, built and run by the same person.
Questions, corrections and feedback go to support@knots.stonefrog.com.
How the pages are made
Every artist page is built from MusicBrainz, the open, community-maintained music encyclopedia. Knots keeps its own copy of the data MusicBrainz publishes and checks for a new release of it every day.
The sentences at the top of an artist page — how many artists it connects to, which other acts its members played in, founded or toured with, and in which years — are generated from those recorded relationships, not written by hand and not produced by an AI model. The graph on each page draws the same relationships. If MusicBrainz has no record of a connection, neither does Knots.
Short background excerpts come from Wikipedia, and artist photos from fanart.tv or Wikipedia; each source is credited on the attribution page. Albums known to MusicBrainz only as bootlegs are left out of the discographies.
Why it exists
Music history is a tangle, not a list. A band's members came from other bands and went on to start new ones; producers and session players tie whole scenes together. Knots exists to untangle it — pull one thread, and see where it leads.
